Neon presents a focused selection of works by Dario Escobar in collaboration with Marek Wolfryd, Roger Muñoz, Antonio Vidal, Magdalena Petroni, and Catherine Mulligan. Developed for Material Art Fair 2026, the presentation reflects General Expenses’ ongoing engagement with material exploration, critical inquiry, and context-specific exhibition strategies.
The concept uses neon not as literal illumination, but as a framework for examining visibility, artifice, and the circulation of images and objects within contemporary culture. Neon’s association with commercial display, urban infrastructures, and perceptual intensity provides a shared reference point for the participating artists, whose practices intersect across questions of form, reproduction, and value.
Wolfryd’s investigations into consumer economies and Escobar’s recontextualized objects, Muñoz’s tropical horror, and Vidal’s temporal inquiries align with the gallery’s interest in hybrid methodologies. Petroni contributes approaches that foreground material tension, chromatic experimentation, and sculptural syntax. While Mulligan brings an abandoned-poetic presence, her work acts as a quiet counterpoint to the brashness of electric hues. Together, their works articulate a field in which color operates as both surface condition and conceptual device.
Installed within a constrained architecture (an art fair booth), the project emphasizes contrast: white walls and a dark floor create a controlled environment for examining saturation, scale, and the perceptual effects of high-chroma works. In this setting, Neon functions as an analytical proposition about attention, display mechanisms, and the role of visual intensity in contemporary artistic production.
